When Mike Jacobi took over flea market management in 1982, there was clean-up work to be done. Some vendors were arriving too early for the weekly, outdoor sale on Saturdays. They’d camp out on Friday night, to stake out a space.

It wasn’t necessarily a peaceful bunch: some drank too much and fought with other vendors who grew to feel entitled about where to set up shop. Mike decided to not let anybody into Princeton City Park until 6 a.m., when vendors’ vehicles were admitted in the order they arrived and lined up.

“After a month, things settled down,” he says, and it probably helped that each got a ticket for a free doughnut and coffee. Free coffee continues as a vendor perk. Crowds disperse at 1 p.m.
